Asian & American Supermarket - Fargo (1425 Main Ave)
Located just west of downtown, Asian & American Supermarket (often called "A&A") is the largest international grocery store in the Dakotas. In early 2023, the market moved to this massive 20,000-square-foot facility—roughly three times the size of its original location—to accommodate its growing status as a regional hub for multi-ethnic cuisine.
The Supermarket: A Regional Hub
This family-owned "megamart" serves a diverse community, with customers driving hundreds of miles from across North Dakota, South Dakota, and rural Minnesota for ingredients they can't find anywhere else.
Extensive Global Inventory: While the name emphasizes Asian and American staples, the aisles reflect a truly global selection. You can find specialized products from Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, India, and the Philippines, as well as an expanding selection of African, Caribbean, and Middle Eastern goods.
The "Noodle & Sauce" Valleys: The store is famous for its "oodles of noodles"—massive sections of fresh, dried, and instant ramen (including the viral 2X Buldak variety). The sauce aisle is equally impressive, stocked with everything from premium fish sauces to specialized chili crisps.
Fresh Produce & Seafood: A high-turnover produce section offers exotic fruits and vegetables like dragon fruit, baby bok choy, Indian eggplants, and fresh curry leaves. The seafood department provides fresh and frozen options like eel and whole fish that are rare in standard Midwestern grocers.
Unique Snacks: A fan-favorite destination for "hype" snacks, including diverse flavors of Pocky, Hello Panda cookies, matcha KitKats, and Korean Choco Pies.
Lulu's Deli
Tucked inside the supermarket is Lulu's Deli, a popular spot for shoppers to grab a quick, authentic meal.
Vietnamese Specialties: Known for fresh spring rolls, Banh Mi sandwiches, and traditional coffee.
Grab-and-Go: Offers a mix of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean-inspired snacks and beverages that make the long shopping trips more enjoyable.
Why It’s Unique
Clean & Modern: Unlike many smaller ethnic markets, the new 1425 Main Ave location is praised for its bright lighting, wide aisles, and organized layout, creating a "big-box" shopping experience for international goods.
Community Spirit: Owned by siblings John and Sarah Huynh, the store is more than a business; it’s a cultural center that helps preserve culinary traditions for local immigrant families while introducing new flavors to the broader Fargo-Moorhead community.
One-Stop Shop: It effectively combines the variety of multiple specialty stores under one roof, selling everything from heavy sacks of jasmine rice and specialized cooking utensils to fresh herbs and Halal-certified products.
