Didn't have much expectation based on the negative reviews, but to be fair, they were actually helpful through my email interactions. I guess the most important thing is, DO NOT book anything non-refundable before getting your visa.

I came here for a walk-in question about a residence permit and they were extremely accommodating and happily answered my questions with a smile. Out of government run facilities, I am very pleased the this consulate’s service and friendly, willing, helpful, staff.

Despite the bad review's, we had a very fair experience with the consulate. We applied from Toronto for Schengen visa and even though it was said 15 days generally for the process , it has mentioned somewhere in website it will take 30 - 45 days for the visa. We applied 2 months before our trip and our visa was processed in a month. We just got our passport back from Danish embassy Ottawa 2 days after the visa is processed from New York.
So just an advice for people who read the reviews, there are options to apply 6 months ahead of your trip. Plan and prepare your documents very well before applying. You definitely gonna get visa approved within 5 weeks. Also, keep in mind that to get appointment in VFS you need to act very early.
