If you’re living in La Jolla or working near the UTC area and you’re tired of the same old corporate salad bars, Continent Delicatessen (4150 Regents Park Row) is the ultimate local hideaway. Tucked away in the Regents Park Row complex, it’s a charming, old-school European deli that feels a world away from the busy San Diego traffic outside. For those of us who work in the nearby offices, it’s the go-to "secret spot" for a lunch that actually has some character and flavor.
The real draw at Continent Deli is the incredible selection of authentic Eastern European and Mediterranean goods. Their deli counter is packed with high-quality smoked meats, kielbasa, and specialty cheeses that you just can’t find at a regular Ralphs or Vons. If you’re a fan of pierogi or pelmeni, this is your headquarters—you can grab them frozen to take home or check out their prepared food options. They also have a massive variety of imported pickles, mustards, and those heavy, dark rye breads that make a sandwich feel like a real meal.
What really sets this place apart is the "treasure hunt" vibe of the shelves. It’s a small shop, but every inch is covered with unique treats from across Europe. You’ll find rows of colorful chocolates, unique jams, and jars of authentic honey that make for great gifts (or just a Tuesday treat for yourself). The staff is straightforward and helpful; if you’re looking for a specific type of smoked fish or aren't sure which chocolate bar to try, they’ll give you a solid recommendation without any fluff.
One of the best perks for us locals is the convenience of the location, especially if you’re already in the Golden Triangle area. While parking in La Jolla can sometimes be a headache, there’s usually easy parking in the complex lot, making it a quick in-and-out trip. Continent Delicatessen keeps great hours for a midday run: they are open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On Saturdays, they have slightly shorter hours from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and they are closed on Sundays. It’s the perfect place to stock up on unique groceries or grab a slice of Napoleon cake to get you through the afternoon
