I battled a stage 4 pressure ulcer for over a year at hospitals in the suburbs. It wasn't until one of the doctors at Lutheran General recommended I have a surgery with 6 to 8 week recovery
that I realized a second opinion was necessary. As you might have guessed, I decided on Northwestern Memorial (NM).

I informed the doctors at Northwestern that surgery was recommended and I was seeking a second opinion. The doctors reviewed my medical history and were shocked to learn that the doctors from the suburban hospital did not perform one of the most basic, simple, painless, and non invasive tests available. It's literally the first step taken at NM.

They performed the test and had the results to me within a day or two (this was during the week of Christmas as well). The results of the tests indicated the type of treatment needed and they promised to exhaust all options before even considering surgery.

Within three months, the pressure ulcer aka literal hole in my leg, which had been open for the past 16 months, completely and correctly healed with assistance of medications and other non-surgical treatments.

Thank you Northwestern Memorial for saving me the agony of a major surgery and everything associated with it!

The decision to seek a second opinion at Northwestern Memorial remains as one of, if not the best decisions I have ever made in my life.

I brought my 72 year old mother into ER today at approx 12:30 pm. She is disoriented and has anorexia. We were called into triage by an absolutely rude, aggressive and insensitive man with a purple jacket by the name of Steve. I told him I didn't like how he was speaking to my mother or me. He treated us like inmates and not paying patients. He was aggressively unapologetic and walked off. I asked to speak with a supervisor and no one came. I refuse to let this go. How can you feel confident to leave your loved one in the hands of someone speaking like this in an open forum. You would have to wonder what he would do when no one's watching. I was told he's a volunteer. Why volunteer as a senior to mistreat other seniors or anyone for that matter. I would like an outcome or explanation for allowing someone like this to engage with the sick people.

Spent a year and a half there, 24-7, and I can say nothing but good about everything concerning the place. I don't have enough words or space to say how good they were to us in our fight for life.

So, if you actually get a doctor to respond to you, it's decent. But the problem is, doctors have to see 400 patients a year, so you won't get a lot of time. It's worse if you have to see a specialist. And don't even think for a moment you have a "team" helping you. You're at the mercy of whichever doctor you're in front of ad they give conflicting advice.

Upon reading the reviews of this hospital I see nothing but negative but I experienced something absolutely different. I came to the hospital because I didn't trust the judgment of Saint Anthony's hospital. The wait time was exceedingly long. I kind of felt I've been forgotten in my room but when it was finally my turn to be treated they treated me with the most care and respect and love.

This is an excellent hospital with great doctors, nurses, staff and world class amenities. We are lucky to be living in the Chicago area. Thanks to all doctors, nurses and staff for the support and help in times of difficulty. Truly appreciated.

Terrible medical care.Staff tried three times to get blood out of me. Well they could not get a vein. They are dysfunctional and a retarded lot to draw your insurance.
I would not recommend this hospital and it’s retarded staff for adequate medical care and I only regret I can not give this hospital a negative 5 star review…!!!!

I use Northwestern for all the serious stuff. I had OK gynecological surgery. Well done, minimal scarring, no issues post op.

I also delivered my baby here. I've had none of the issues that I've heard of other people at other hospitals having. They honored my birth plan, the birthing and post birth suites were nice, clean, and private. Amazing view. Decent food for hospital food. A good food court.

I can tell that the doctors are busy but still to to make time to make sure you feel heard.

The gynecology surgery team in Prentice had me remove my diamond earring for surgery and lost it.

I was told I had a blood clot in my leg and put on blood thinning medication only to later get an ultrasound done and told I didn’t have a blood clot, so I was on blood thinners for no reason.

Resident Dr. Siva Teja V. Devarakonda came into my room on Feinberg Mezzanine without introducing himself and says “Good morning. Do you know why I’m here?” Um no? How about you introduce yourself and tell me without making me guess? He then tells me he needs to do a drainage for a rectal abscess but anesthesia was an option. He however was adamant on using numbing medication instead. When I expressed fear and hesitancy over a needle being inserted in the rectal area, he condescendingly asked me if I liked hospitals. What kind of dumb question is that? Hospitals aren’t someplace you visit when you get bored, you only go when you need to. That was my first time being hospitalized. I had to ask him to close the curtain all the way to which he apologized and said he didn’t know I wanted the curtain closed all the way. Pretty sure I don’t want people walking by if I’m going to be unclothed from the waist down! He had absolutely no professionalism or bedside manner.

Nurse Emma on Feinberg Mezzanine had me wait for her to take my vitals and retape my IV before she escorted me to the bathroom. If a patient needs to go to the bathroom, take them right then! Don’t make them wait!

The day before surgery, PCT Shardai on Feinberg’s 15th floor mistakenly thought I was having surgery that same day and took away my breakfast. It took her nearly an hour to bring the food back to which she offered no apology.

The day of surgery, I told the nutritionist to skip delivering breakfast to me because I wasn’t supposed to eat or drink anything before surgery and they somehow heard don’t deliver any meals to me that day. So I went 24 hours without eating.

I originally came in for a heart problem. The gynecology surgery team disconnected my heart monitor to use their own heart monitor. After surgery, the device was supposed to go back upstairs with me but they didn’t give it back. No nurse hooked me back up to a monitor so I went the last 2 days without being hooked up to a heart monitor something every patient is supposed to be hooked up to.

Terrible experience! Seriously, go ANYWHERE else for care.

I really appreciate this hospital. I attend several departments here, from internal medicine, endocrinology, ophthalmology, pulmonology - a fairly wide range of care. My experience in some specific instances hasn’t been perfect but that’s hard to ask for - overall it has been a high-quality experience with high-quality care. The fact that my care is coordinated under one overall system is helpful and streamlines my care; the MyChart App is a user-friendly resource!

4-5 hour waiting line. Super expensive for a casual 10 minute diagnosis. Quite disappointed as i was expecting a highly professional treatment.

I absolutely love Northwestern Memorial Hospital the employees are very friendly.

Mom was in the hospital for a week and I have to say that they staff on the 4th floor of Galter Pavillion did an amazing job caring for her, feeding her, making sure she was comfortable, and sharing advice on care. I am forever grateful to them especially Cate, Lily, Maddy, and physicians. Thank you

I did have to wait longer than I'd have hoped to be admitted to a room (approx. 4.5 hours, entered the ER at 1:30am), but I was seen nearly immediately upon arrival, tested, and given an IV to help hydrate me while I waited. Upon being admitted to a room I received great care almost without exception. One nurse on the afternoon shift didn't hook me back up to my IV when I got back from the bathroom because she said I "didn't need it anymore", but another swiftly corrected that. Thanks NWMH! I came in very scared and left reassured about my path to recovery.

I tried scheduling with a rheumatologist that transferred from Rush! They refused to schedule me because my rare condition is not listed on a list of conditions. When I tried explaining it to them they refused to listen.

7 hours in ER after my husband fell and dislocated two fingers. First doc said they would suspend his hand and give sedation to correct. 4 hours of horrible pain later, two residents and an attending came in and the residents, giving only a small amount of pain med twisted his fingers back(multiple tries) while he screamed. One resident said he needed nothing else there would be an X-ray and discharge. Almost 2 hours later I asked the nurse for something to protect the fingers and hand as we were headed back to another state. The first doc came as I was trying to bandage and support the hand, said he needed a splint. Seeing a hand specialist 2 weeks later, the hand needed to be resplinted as they had done it wrong. And, the metacarpal fx I had pointed out in his first films , the one they said wasn't a fracture was taken care of as well. Nurses were nice but terrible care

They were the finest staff I ever meet. So helpful and friendly just don't ask for anything for pain here. They wont give you anything good just non narcotic pain meds that don't help they hurt your stomach and the shot of Tori dal hurt my arm. Nice friendly helpful staff but you will suffer in pain till you eat a alarming amount of ibuprofen or aspirin and you have a better chance of seeing Jesus Christ come off the cross than getting a 10/325 norco out of these guys. No chance on anything strong just 5/325 norco if you have blood coming out of you. If you have Cancer that's different then they will dispense narcotics but other than cancer be prepared to suffer. I asked politely for just a muscle relaxer and after a lecture about the dangers of Benzos I had to question the Dr and state that Im only asking for a 2 day supply. She gave me 2. Lol

If I could give a negative rating I would. My daughter-in-law was here for 3 days and it was an unbelievably awful experience from the moment we entered the ER until we were discharged. The only excellent care was by Liana, RN on the 13th floor. She was outstanding. And she really cared, and it showed. We will never go back.
