Turnstyle Underground Market

If you spend any time commuting through Columbus Circle, you’ve probably walked right past the entrance to Turnstyle Underground Market without realizing there’s a whole world beneath the sidewalk. Located right in the subway station at 8th Avenue, this spot is a complete game-changer because you don't even need a MetroCard to get in. It’s the perfect sanctuary for those days when the NYC weather is acting up and you want to shop or grab a bite without battling the elements on street level.

The vibe here is a far cry from your typical dark subway corridor; it’s clean, bright, and lined with over 30 unique vendors. Stretching an entire city block, it feels more like a curated boutique mall than a transit hub. It’s the go-to spot for finding gifts that actually have some personality, like handmade goods from The Harlem Soap Maker or spicy finds from Hell’s Kitchen Hot Sauce, making it easy to check off your shopping list during a commute.

Food-wise, this place is a hidden gem for anyone tired of standard fast food. You can basically do a global food tour in one hallway—grab some incredible salteñas at Bolivian Llama Party, smell the heaven that is Doughnuttery's fresh mini-donuts, or sit down for a solid bowl of noodles at Hungry Panda. Most of these spots are local favorites, so the quality is much higher than what you’d expect from a typical food court.

What locals really appreciate is the sheer convenience. It’s well-lit, feels safe, and offers free Wi-Fi, which is a lifesaver if you need to finish an email before losing your signal on the train. It’s even pet-friendly, so don't be surprised to see people browsing with their dogs. It’s one of those "only in New York" experiences that manages to make the daily grind feel like a bit of an adventure.

Estimated Prices

Turnstyle offers a range of price points, catering to both the quick commuter snack and the intentional shopper:

This place is just fantastic! Very cool market immediately adjacent to the Columbus Circle subway station connecting A/C/B/D/1 trains. Lots of options, very inviting space.

Great place to take a break from the heat or cold and grab a quick bite. There are about a dozen small shops down here - 1/2 food.

I had no idea this place existed until I had to take my train from this station the other day . I was like what’s going on here , am I at the right spot . I was on my way home but ended up staying here for hours .

Brilliant way to sell some goodies & attract people from their busy crazy life . I tried a slice of cheese pizza from a new pizza place . Then got some sushi for dinner & saw the boba place & had to get a brown boba milk tea .

Was gonna go home but ended up spending a lot but had a blast by myself just walking around . All the store had some cute stuff , especially the jewelry, the yummy food . People were so kind , friendly .

Great, affordable food options. I recently ate at Falafel Plant and grabbed a mini cheese cake at the bakery near it. Both were delicious.
