Our history

In the early 1950s, a group of citizens led by the late Dr. Joseph Massony and Mr. George Fonseca took the first steps toward developing one of the first New Orleans hospitals to serve the citizens on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish.

Those early efforts, so full of enthusiasm for the pioneers, eventually came to fruition through a citizens group and hospital committee with dozens of area families and individuals including Mr. Beauregard Miller, Jr., Frank Ehret, Jr., Nat Knight, Jr., George Fonseca, Eldon Majoue and Doctors Massony and Samuel Logan.

West Jefferson Medical Center opened its doors in April 1960. Through its distinguished history, it has had an amazing $13.5 billion dollar economic impact on the community. Not only is West Jefferson an important corporate entity and economic engine, today it is the major provider of healthcare for Westbank citizens out of all the New Orleans hospitals.

If I could give 0 stars I would. I went to the ER because something was obviously wrong with my right wrist/arm. It was incredibly swollen the slightest touch brought excruciating pain. The skin was really tight and bright, red and hot to the touch. I had no idea what had happened. I thought maybe it was broken. The whole visit from start to finish was a nightmare pretty much from the second person that I talk to you. I was spoken to very condescending Lee they were very snide. It was like they didn’t take me seriously and anything that I was saying, the doctor came in and asked me what was wrong. I explained to him what he cut me off, and then he glanced at my arm and looked surprised when he saw it actually was swollen and then right above my wrist on the side where was the most swollen and red he pressed down it’s really hard and that was pretty much the extent of it and he left. They ordered me an x-ray. The x-ray tech seems to be taking x-rays of my elbow and it seem like anywhere but the actual place I said it hurt they brought me back to the room once the x-rays came back the doctor came in said oh everything looks fine your elbows not broken we’re gonna send you home with some anti-inflammatories in a sling, and then sent me on my way 2 1/2 weeks later my arm is still swollen still extremely painful and no closer to getting any answers of what exactly is wrong. And I have to point out how extremely disappointing it is to me that the nurses seemed more worried about fixing their hair and finding a stylish mask to cover their face than they were about any of the patients.

I'm giving 2 stars bc my experience with this place has "NOT" been good. Dec 5th my dad was admitted to hospital for pneumonia and stage 4 lung cancer. Since day 1, I've had to constantly pick medical trash of ground in his room ( needle caps, blood glucose needles, alcohol wipes, etc). If you get the right ppl that are here bc they want to actually help ppl. You will get the help you need. If you do not. Then you will have to constantly tell them the job they are supposed to do. Constantly ask over and over for things to get done. Registration dept needs to train thier employees on customer service and manners. I will not recommend this place to anyone.

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I would not bring even a homeless dog to this place to be treated. After all 3 times my father was in this hospital in the last 9 months. I've had nothing but issues and constantly have nothing but issues. My father passed away at this place on the 24th of August @715am and now here we are on the 6th of September, which is basically 2 weeks from the day he has passed and this hospital still hasn't signed death certificate for my father. Hospital needs much better staff who actually do their jobs. Hospital gave funeral home wrong name of doctor that has to sign death certificate and now I'm having to do their job to be able to have my father's services. Very unprofessional and beyond sad that a hospital could careless of this issue, that they have caused and don't seem to care to get it completed. Guess when hospital can't charge insurance anymore you get thrown to the side and basically have to work to get it done yourself while trying to plan services for a parent that has passed.

LA law states a death certificate is supposed to be signed within 24 hours of a death. A loved one passed away at the hospital after being in the hospital for about a week 2 weeks ago & the death certificate has yet to be signed.

My son was diagnosed with a brain tumor 3 weeks ago. We live near Baton Rouge and was told it would be a month before my son could be seen by a neurologist in the Baton Rouge area. We were referred to Dr. Culicchia through family of my son's wife. Once contacted, Dr. Culicchia reviewed the MRI and admitted my son to West Jefferson NCU the next day. Dr. Culicchia and his team did MRIs and set a plan of action for the surgery for tumor removal. The surgeon explained the procedure very well and told us what to expect. My son responded well to the surgery, but had issues with the external ventricular drains plugging. The surgeons had to perform emergency surgery to install a third drain to get the intracranial pressure down. It worked, and our son responded well to the surgery. Today, he had surgery to remove the final drain and to install a shunt. He is doing very well, and we are so thankful for Dr. Culicchia and his team of surgeons. We found each of them to be caring and empathetic and only wanting the best for our son. The NCU nursing staff is amazing! My daughter in law, wife and myself have nothing but great things to say about these wonderful nurses! They have taken care of my son like he was their family. They have treated me and my family with love and respect and we will be forever grateful to each and every one of them. They are on the front lines every day making a difference in peoples lives! In the three weeks that we have been at West Jefferson, we have had nothing but great interactions with the security guards, cafeteria workers, and maintenance workers! Each and every person we encountered made us feel like family. These wonderful people are what makes West Jefferson the top notch facility that it is today. Please continue investing in these people that give graciously to their patients. It means the world for their recovery and gives family and friends confidence knowing their loved ones are being cared for by such wonderful people!

If I could have given it less than one star, I would have. Before my double neck surgery, I was brought to CT scan and the transport dropped me from the CT scan table to the floor on my butt. Now I'm having constant lower back pain and West Jefferson hospital case manager and risk department say that there's nothing they can do about it. I'll be discharged from Bridge point and I'm going to go to Ochsner because I know I'll be ok there. This is a worse hospital than murdercrest (Meadow Crest). What is wrong with the hospitals that they have no concerns about the patients. Sad just sad.
