If you’re looking for a restaurant that captures that "only in New York" magic without the stuffy attitude, you have to find your way to SHMONÉ at 61 W 8th St. Tucked into a cozy spot in Greenwich Village, this place is the brainchild of Chef Eyal Shani and is famous for being the first Israeli restaurant in the U.S. to earn a Michelin star. Don’t let the "fine dining" label fool you, though—the vibe here is high-energy, intimate, and totally unpretentious. With only about 50 seats, it feels more like a private dinner party where the kitchen and the dining room are one and the same.

What really distinguishes SHMONÉ is that they literally recreate the menu every single day. There are no "signature dishes" that stay on the menu for years; instead, the chefs print out a new list each afternoon based on whatever fresh produce, fish, or meat looked best at the market that morning. A huge benefit for diners is the open-kitchen counter seating. If you can snag a spot there, you’re basically in the front row for a culinary performance, watching the team work the charcoal grill and assemble plates with incredible speed and creativity.

The food itself is what they call "neo-Levantine"—think bold, smoky flavors and simple ingredients taken to the absolute limit. You might find a whole roasted cauliflower one night or a 77-layer wagyu skewer the next. Their Jerusalem Bagel is a local legend; it’s a long, ring-shaped bread that comes out piping hot with olive oil and za’atar, and it’s basically mandatory for the table. It’s the kind of cooking that doesn't hide behind heavy sauces, relying instead on the char of the grill and the quality of the ingredients to do the talking.

Logistics are a bit more "Village-style," meaning it’s popular and stays busy. While they do take reservations through Resy, they keep a few spots open for walk-ins if you're feeling lucky and don't mind a wait. It’s a great spot for a date or a night out with friends who actually care about what’s on their plate. Between the upbeat music, the friendly staff who clearly love what they do, and the smell of the wood-fired grill, it’s a clean, vibrant, and unforgettable addition to 8th Street.

Business Hours:

Monday – Saturday: 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM (Final Seating)

Sunday: Closed (Note: Because the menu is finalized just before they open, it’s always a surprise! It’s a smart move to call (646) 438-9815 or check their Instagram if you have specific dietary questions before heading over.)

It was a pretty good meal, but I wasn’t wow-ed. Everything was super expensive for what it is, especially the tiny portions of veggies for over $20. My fave dish of the night was actually the pistachio pesto pasta, it was fresh and rich all at the same time. Shrimp was okay, and short rib was very fatty/cloying and the sauce make it worse, it didn’t cut through the fat at all.

Got the Jerusalem Bagel, Spinach and Pea Shoots and 76 layers of Wagyu. It was good, not great - and certainly not Michelin star worthy. Unfortunately the conclusion is that there are many other places in NYC worth going to before Shmone.

We were promptly seated at 5pm at the Chefs counter, and service was impeccably paced, allowing us to make our 730pm Broadway tickets on time! Everything from the Za'atar Jerusalem bagel to the tangelo custard was incredible! While I would generally prefer Mike Solononov's style of portraying Israeli cuisine just a TAD bit more, I thought this Michelin experience REALLY delivered on flavor, seasonality, and simplicity. Nothing more, and nothing less, than was required to make these elements and ingredients shine! If you're a fan of Solomonov, Miznon, or levantine cuisine in general, don't hesitate to make a resy here!

Food is good but not great. Service is good, not great. Atmosphere is good but tables are cramped. NYC is too competitive a market for this one to be this popular especially with these prices (a small - less than a side dish - of sauteed spinach and pea shoots for $23; come on).

If there were 8 days in a week, I would go to Shmone every single one of them. I always sit at the bar to watch the creations. Chefs and staff are super friendly and know their stuff. Great and unique food (as with the sister restaurant Malka) and I never feel rushed. So yes, I am a fan… visit 1x and you will be too.

I was thrilled to have an opportunity to eat here after passing by every day for years and it did not disappoint. I loved the energy in the room as soon as we entered—a happy buzzy vibe and everyone was enjoying the moment. The service here is excellent. Warm and inviting from start to finish. I love how we were greeted and all our servers were gracious and knowledgeable. The special cocktails were delicious and wine recommendations were perfect. We selected four shareable plates and two desserts. With one exception we were very happy with our food. The Pomms Anna was our favorite. The price was high but worth it. Lamb kebabs were also great. The only disappointment was the blackened cod which had an odd texture and overly fishy taste. This was too bad since it’s also one of the higher priced options and we were unable to eat it. Desserts were good, especially the warm chocolate chip cookies and milk. I would definitely return, and maybe give the interactive bar experience a try.

We had a wonderful experience at Shmone. Sitting at the chef’s counter provided a great view of the kitchen, and the overall atmosphere had a nice, welcoming vibe.
Our server was a standout: knowledgeable, patient, and helpful in guiding us through the menu without being overbearing.

The menu offered a surprising variety for such a small kitchen. A few highlights from our meal:
• Jerusalem Bagel: Surprisingly decadent and a great start to the meal.
• Fava Bean Dish: Well-executed with a nice balance of flavor and texture.
• Kohlrabi: We really enjoyed the pairing of the rich sauce with the texture of the long-cooked root vegetable.
• Pistachio Pesto Pasta: This was the pasta of the day; it was sharp, bright, and well-seasoned.
• Short Rib: This was a highlight of the evening, featuring a great seared top and deep, caramelized richness.

The only minor drawback was the lack of a dairy-free dessert option.

Aside from that, the quality of the food and the attentive service made for a great evening. We’re definitely looking forward to returning!

SHMONÉ in New York delivers a vibrant, modern Israeli dining experience with bold, exciting flavors. The open kitchen adds energy to the space, creating a lively yet intimate atmosphere. I tried several shareable plates—the dishes were fresh, creative, and beautifully balanced with rich spices and bright ingredients. The attention to detail in both presentation and flavor really stood out. With attentive service and a dynamic vibe, it’s a spot I’d happily return to for a memorable meal.

The food is phenomenal. Definitely worthy of a Michelin star, but nothing else is worthy of it.
The service, while very friendly, was lacking on details. We changed wines and the new wine was served in the same glasses that were used for the previous wine. Silverware was never changed even as we went thru different dishes. Plates were never changed even as there were sauces from the previous dishes. We ordered cocktails that were never brought to the table. The bathroom is super small and was extremely untidy with rolls of toilet paper lying on the floor. Clearly nobody was checking the bathroom to ensure it was up to standard to a Michelin restaurant.
The restaurant is lovely, the food is amazing, the waiter was very friendly and nice. But they do have some training and improvement to do to tighten up the quality of their service.
Would I come back? Absolutely! The food alone is worth going, but there are some expectations to be met for a Michelin star and they did not meet them. I would be surprise they can maintain their star unless they improve on the delivery of their service in a market as competitive as NYC.

Hands-down, one of the top 10 meals we’ve had in the last five years anywhere everybody especially the staff was just incredible. Highly recommend sitting at the bar and try everything you can especially the shrimps, the pea shoots, the Wagyu, the calamari, and let the Wine specialist pick you a great bottle of burgundy and make sure moose behind the bar makes you one of his specialty cocktails. We will be back many many more times.
