After a long journey in the merchant marines and a master chef on a luxury cruise liner, Bud Jones came back to San Antonio and opened his Military Drive location. Taking direction from his fathers famous “Bob Jones Restaurant” on Roosevelt Avenue, he began his journey which has now lasted over 54 years.
Once originally Walsh’s Grocery Store at the corner of Military and Commercial, Bud started serving fish and chips in October of 1958. The very day of the grand opening, he was so busy he excused himself from his customers, went out the back door and begged a lady hanging laundry to please come and help him. Bernice Housos continued to work here until she passed away in 2008.
The building has gone through many changes and additions, including a devastating fire in 1978. With the generous help and understanding of customers through the years, Bud was up and running again in thirty days.
In 1985, Bud’s daughter Kathy joined him and has committed to carry on the Bud Jones tradition. We base our success on good food for a fair price, the loyalty of our customers and the dedication of our employees, some of which have been with us for over 40 years.

- Excellent food, warm inviting hospitality and excellent customer service. Would definately recommend and happy to return. We ordered the Broilers Delight, Buds basket, kids spaghetti and one all you can eat fish and fries. Everything was delicious.
- It was so good! We got all you can eat fish and a country fried steak. We were very satisfied. The fried mushrooms were delicious. Was super busy but they managed very well. It only took us 5 minutes to get a table. Our waiter was Brian. He was great! Very nice and friendly. He made us feel welcomed. We will be asking for him when we return.
- Ok, so I've lived in San Antonio all my life. I have been to Bud Jones several times when i was younger. I'm not sure why I hadn't gone back in so long. Never had a bad experience. Our son, who lives in Austin said let's go there for lunch. The picture is a chicken fried chicken, gravy on the side. I should have taken a picture after I dressed my plate up. I also got a loaded potato, but they give you the butter, sour cream, cheese, and bacon bits on the side. You dress your potato yourself. My chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. It's a really big portion, no complaints at all. I also had the onion rings that were a really nice surprise. Crispy and didn't crumble and fall apart. The staff was friendly and our waitress was very attentive to us. If you haven't been here or haven't been in a while. I'd say it's time to give it a try.
