Korean Market

Located at 6210 Fairdale Dr, Korean Market is a hidden staple of San Antonio’s northeast side. While larger international chains have moved into the city, this unassuming, family-run market remains a favorite for purists. It masterfully balances a tightly packed grocery store with a "no-frills" back-of-store restaurant that serves some of the most authentic Korean soul food in South Texas.

The Fairdale Highlights

The "Secret" Restaurant: Tucked behind the kitchenwares at the back of the store is a small dining area where you order directly from a kitchen window. There is no fancy signage—just a whiteboard and a printed menu. Regulars flock here for the Dolsot Bibimbap (served in a sizzling stone pot) and the Kimchi Pork Stir-fry, which is famous for its bold, "home-style" heat.

Complimentary Rice & Banchan: In a rare move for modern eateries, the restaurant often provides complimentary rice for dine-in customers. The accompanying banchan (side dishes) are made in-house and rotate daily, often featuring unique items like sweetened potato or delicate omelet slices alongside the staple cabbage kimchi.

The "Crunchy" Kimchi: The market’s refrigerated section is the go-to source for house-made, small-batch kimchi. Unlike the softer, more fermented versions found in larger stores, the kimchi here is prized for being exceptionally crunchy and less sour, appealing to those who prefer a fresher "geotjeori" style.

Seafood Pancake (Haemul Pajeon): The kitchen is widely praised for its seafood pancake, which emerges crisp and golden on the outside while remaining creamy and studded with generous amounts of shrimp, squid, and scallions on the inside.

Spicy Seafood Noodle Bowl: Often listed as "No. 7" on the menu, this massive bowl is a local legend. It’s a DIY-heat experience where you control the spice level, loaded with a high-quality medley of mussels, clams, and springy noodles.

Why It’s Unique

Korean Market is defined by its "Truth in Advertising." It doesn't rely on flashy branding or a social media presence; its reputation is built entirely on the quality of its pantry staples and the consistency of its kitchen. It is uniquely utilitarian—it’s one of the few places in San Antonio where you can buy a traditional stone dolsot bowl in one aisle and then eat a meal prepared in that very same type of vessel just a few feet away. It offers a "time-capsule" experience of what Korean grocery shopping felt like before the era of "Super" H Marts.

Insider Tip: The restaurant is closed on Sundays, even though the market itself remains open for limited afternoon hours. If you're coming for the fresh japchae, be sure to grab it early in the day when the noodles are at their softest. Also, keep an eye out for their selection of Korean sodas—they are a fun, nostalgic treat that perfectly cuts through the spice of their stews.

This Korean market is legit. They got soju they got pepero pocky sticks. They have lots of yummy Korean snacks and goods and fresh foods. It’s a little cramped, but it’s usually not too busy and they got lots of stuff so it’s expected. Love this place would highly recommend for a Korean experience in their market.

The restaurant here offers the only genuine Korean comfort food in San Antonio. Might as well be eating dolsot bibimbap or kimchi-jjigae in Myeong-dong.

Best selection and prices in San Antonio. We do our monthly shopping here for all our Asian supplies. Any incidentals we get closer to home on the West side, but we drive here for large purchases. Clean store and helpful staff.

Cozy but vibrant Karean market. Great selection of rich flavorful products. Select produce with great prices. Fresh kimchi, kimchi cucumbers, puto, korean snack, noodles, large selection of dry mushrooms, seaweeds, asian ice creams and super friendly staff. There is also a restaurant inside the store you can dine in. Fresh and amazing food. They also sell pots and pans, woks, serving bowls and trays, oh my goodness so many things ,you must come and see, try and taste for yourselves, it is so worth it.

It was fine except for when I was looking in the vegetable area, an employee comes out from the back of storage, pushes me, then says move.

This is a really cool little market with a restaurant tucked away in the back. The food was pretty decent. We tried the Beef Gulgolgi and the Black Bean Noodles. Aside from the restaurant, there's a pretty nice variety of items available in the market. It's definitely worth checking this place out.
