Located on the historic and eclectic Spenard Road at number 3315, Arigato | Japanese Restaurant is a quiet, unassuming sanctuary in the heart of Anchorage. While the exterior reflects the rugged, lived-in charm of the Spenard district, the interior is a masterclass in the "Omotenashi" philosophy—the Japanese art of selfless hospitality. For over a decade, this family-run gem has been the city's "word-of-mouth" favorite for those who prefer the soul of a neighborhood bistro over the flash of a franchise.
It is the definitive destination for the "hidden gem" seeker—a place where the warmth of the tea and the precision of the knife create a luminous escape from the Alaskan chill.
The "Spenard Soul" Experience
The Ritual of Welcome: Arigato is legendary for its immediate hospitality. Before you even open the menu, guests are often greeted with complimentary hot tea and edamame. This small, traditional gesture sets the tone for a meal that feels more like an invitation to a private home than a commercial transaction.
The "Haduken" & Local Legends: The sushi menu features rolls that have gained a cult following among Anchorage locals. The Haduken Roll and the namesake Spenard Roll (featuring spicy tuna and a high-energy kick) are celebrated for their generous portions and the high-integrity freshness of the fish—a feat in the far North.
Bento Box Mastery: While sushi is the star, Arigato’s kitchen entrees are the unsung heroes of the Alaskan winter. Their Sukiyaki (a traditional hot pot) and Kalbi (marinated short ribs) are served in beautifully lacquered bento boxes that offer a balanced, multi-sensory tour of Japanese comfort flavors.
The Neighborhood "Secret": The atmosphere is famously quiet and intimate. With only a handful of booths and a low-key, unpretentious decor, it is the preferred "safe harbor" for locals who want to enjoy high-grade Tuna Hand Rolls and plum sake without the noise and wait times of the downtown tourist hubs.
The Authentic Standard
"Tradition isn't just a recipe; it's the warmth of the tea and the smile at the door."
REVIEWS
- Everything about this place is fantastic! The best thing is the salads they serve with their meals... they are like nothing else in Anchorage!
- Been coming here with my husband for the last 12years, great Sushi & Salmon Teriyaki & plum Sake wine & generous veggie sides with great flavors
- Delicious sushi and great people! We were just getting dinner on our way to the Airport to return home, we feel so lucky to have found such a great spot by chance.
Seriously good sushi. We’d eat here constantly if we were locals. Thank you for the great food.
- Went to check this place out after reading some good reviews and it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great. The owners where very nice and service was quick, so 5 stars to that. The potstickers were okay, but the sushi itself was subpar. It appeared the raw fish in my sushi was mangled so didn’t present well and didn’t taste very fresh. I was their first customer on a weekday, so I would give this place another shot in the future. Will update my review upon second experience!
- One of my favorite places in town. It's a great place to go for some amazing food.
- I’ve lived on the west side for a few years and have never heard of this place. Honestly, I don’t think I can go to any other sushi restaurant because Arigato definitely takes #1 for me! I got the Sushi Imperial & Spenard roll w/ spicy tuna. Everything was so delicious, and what wasn’t pictured was the tofu appetizer, steak bento & pork bento but all were just as good! Highly recommend this amazing Japanese restaurant.
- This is a welcoming place with amazing food. We've been going there for years and feel like family.
- This is one of our regular places to eat. Decent prices, good food, good service. It's a small family run business that has been here for a long time.
The sushi is ok and comparable to ronnies on dimond.
- We stumbled into this place while on vacation. The food was delicious and the service was good. No complaints!
The sukiyaki was amazing! Its the perfect blend of sweetness with salt, and has a powerful umami flavour. The tofu is pretty good (i dont like tofu, but this is an exception) and the noodles were sooo good, i forgot to take a photo for a review because I inhaled half the food before remembering The yakisoba has a very nice chewy texture, the flavour is lighter in comparison to the sukiyaki The tako(octopus) sushi was good, it only comes with 2 pieces for $6 And the dragon roll was great, I really liked the spicy mayo on top At the end of the meal we were served watermelon and it was great for helping all the food settle down.
