If you’re cruising down Preston Road and want to escape the typical burger-and-fries routine, you have to pull into the lot at Bubala Cafe & Grill. Located at 17479 Preston Rd, this place is a total "hidden gem" in Far North Dallas that brings the flavors of the Silk Road right to our backyard. It’s a family-run spot that specializes in Uzbek and Russian comfort food, and the second you walk in, the rustic decor and the smell of charcoal-grilled meats make you feel like you’ve stepped into a cozy home in Central Asia rather than a Texas shopping center.

The food here is the definition of "made from scratch." For most of us locals, the must-order dish is the Uzbek Plov—a massive plate of slow-simmered rice, tender beef, and carrots that’s basically the national dish of Uzbekistan. If you’re a fan of dumplings, their Manti (huge steamed lamb dumplings) and Pelmeni (Russian-style meat dumplings) are game-changers. And you can’t leave without trying the Adjarian Khachapuri; it’s a boat-shaped bread filled with a pool of molten cheese and topped with a runny egg. You tear off the crust, dip it in the middle, and realize why this place is a 2025 "Best of Big D" winner.

What really distinguishes Bubala from your average deli or cafe is the atmosphere, especially on the weekends. While it’s a quiet, friendly spot for a weekday lunch, Friday and Saturday nights turn into a full-on celebration with live music and even belly dancing. It’s the perfect place for a big family birthday or a unique date night. Plus, it’s BYOB friendly, so you can bring your own bottle of wine to pair with their signature lamb kebabs or a slice of their famous, multi-layered Honey Cake for dessert.

The vibe is warm, unpretentious, and deeply authentic. The Margulis family really puts their heart into the service, and they’re always happy to explain the menu if you’ve never tried a savory Samsa pastry or a bowl of hearty Lagman noodle soup before. It’s a clean, reliable, and soulful part of the Dallas food scene that makes the 75252 area feel a lot more international. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick takeout order or staying for the weekend karaoke, Bubala is a local treasure that keeps the neighborhood well-fed and always coming back for more.

Amazing food! And unlike any other Eastern Bloc restaurant I've ever been to on a Friday or Saturday night. The owner and Ukrainian DJ sing a wide variety of songs! I've become addicted. ;)

Update after my second visit:

I came back to Bubala with my wife and in-laws, and this second visit confirmed what I felt the first time: this kitchen has a real soul.

I had the boiled pelmeni again, and they were exactly what I hoped for — warm, honest, comforting, and full of memory. I also had the herring under fur coat, Shuba, and it touched me deeply. This is the kind of food that does not feel manufactured. It feels inherited. It feels carried from home, family, winter, and tradition.

So many restaurants today pretend. They decorate, raise the prices, create an image, and make you pay for a performance without delivering anything real. Bubala is different. This did not feel like being sold a concept. It felt like being welcomed into a family meal.

A special note to the chef: thank you. You can taste when food is made with respect, patience, and roots. You can taste when someone is not just following a recipe, but protecting a memory.

The food has weight. The food has warmth. The food has soul.

That is rare now, and it deserves respect.

First visit:

Outstanding experience at Bubala. The food is powerful, generous, and deeply comforting—evoking the strength and warmth of Siberian kitchens (amazing boiled Pelmeni) where meals are meant to sustain, not perform. The atmosphere feels authentic and grounded, with a real sense of heritage and soul. Service was excellent: welcoming, attentive, and sincere. This is not just a restaurant, it’s a place that carries memory, endurance, and care. Remarkable and absolutely worth returning to.

Finally made it here and already planning my next visit. The vibe is warm and inviting with beautiful murals and white tablecloths—fancy but still comfortable .

Start with the Adjarian Khachapuri—it's a cheese boat with an egg and butter mixed in right at the table. Rich, melty, absolute perfection . The Chicken Kebabs were juicy and flavorful, served with rice and crispy potatoes . Also tried the Vareniki Dumplings (potato and onion)—soft pillowy pockets that pair perfectly with sour cream .

Portions are generous—easily shareable. Save room for the Russian Honey Cake; light, flaky layers, not too sweet .

Service was attentive without hovering. Kirill (shout out) knew the menu inside out and made great recs .

BYOB friendly, which is a nice touch . Live music on weekends adds to the atmosphere . If you haven't tried Uzbek or Georgian food, this is the spot. Worth every penny.

We had such an amazing experience at Bubala Cafe and Grill! The khachapuri was absolutely mind-blowing and the pelmeni were phenomenal. My daughter loved them so much we had to order an extra portion to go
Service was great, everything came out perfect, and the portions are HUGE. My husband wanted to try the plov but they didn’t have it that day, so now we definitely have a reason to come back! We loved everything. ❤️

I had a delicious meal here with my father last night. If you’ve never tried Eastern European / Uzbek food, definitely give it a try. I enjoyed the Samsa and the rolled cabbage. Alim was our server. He was very polite and helpful. I will definitely be back!

Tasty, authentic food. Friendly service, and if you’re lucky enough to be there for the belly dancing, you’re in for a treat of a show.

Best Uzbek food in Dallas! Service was fantastic. Brayden was super friendly and attentive. The food was super authentic (not Uzbek but I've been to Uzbekistan). The entertainment was awesome. Great belly dancer and singer (we came on a Friday night). Overall, great time!

First time here for a quick bite with my fiancé. We had the khachapuri and lagman soup, and a pitcher of the kompot.

Everything was delicious and the kompot was very light and fresh. We will be back for dinner and live music which they have on Fridays and Saturdays!

Absolutely unforgettable dining experience! The dumplings were a taste sensation, perfectly seasoned and delightfully textured. But it was Kirill, our waiter, who truly made our evening special with his warmth and impeccable service. Highly recommend for anyone looking for amazing food paired with top-notch service. A must-visit!
