NEW YORK CITY CENTER has played a defining role in the cultural life of the city since 1943. The distinctive Neo-Moorish building was founded by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia as Manhattan’s first performing arts center with the mission of making the best in theater, dance, and music accessible to all audiences. This commitment continues today through celebrated dance and musical theater series like the Fall for Dance Festival and the Tony-honored Encores! series; the annual season by Principal Dance Company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; and new dance series Artists at the Center.

City Center welcomes audiences to experience internationally acclaimed artists including Kyle Abraham, Matthew Bourne, Ayodele Casel, Manhattan Theatre Club, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Twyla Tharp, on the same stage where legends made their mark. Dedicated to a culture built on the values of curiosity, collaboration, accessibility, and inclusivity, City Center’s dynamic programming, art exhibitions, and studio events are complemented by education and community engagement programs that bring the performing arts to thousands of New York City students, teachers, and families every year, in all five boroughs.

Fall for Dance is definitely a reason to be in NYC in the Fall. Always introduces me to a new dance company.

So fun! We attended Fall for Dance the other day and had a blast.

We arrived about an hour early and were able to join the free dance lessons in the upstairs lobby area.

The performances were great! We saw the Ballet BC, Rhapsody in Blue, and Oh, Courage for a very affordable price. The place was packed (~10% mask wearers for anyone concerned) and there was a real camaraderie among the patrons.

Highly recommend checking out a play or other performance here, and supporting the arts however you can.

Photography prohibited, but you can check out images and clips on the Center’s website.

City Center is a wonderful theater with near perfect view of the stage (and a nice bar; even the coffee is perfect).
Most important are the programs it hosts. The Fall for Dance festival offers "cheap" tickets for about a week of nightly performances by a diversity of dance companies and dance styles.
The Encores series presents short runs of musicals so outstanding they often later find their way to longer runs on broadway.
And much more.
It's one of NYC cultural gems.

A “hidden” gem in NYC. A great venue with some of the best shows you can find anywhere in the world

My latest year of Fall for Dance - always a wonderful experience, and despite the size of the audience, getting in and out is remarkably smooth and well organized.

A beautiful and modern theater. The seats are comfortable and offer a lot of leg room.

Choose sitting carefully. We ended up with nose-bleed sitting. You can see, but it is a very steep angle.
